About

Venturing is an exciting program for older youth, both male and female, ages 14 (or 13 and have completed the eighth grade) through 21. Just like Cub Scouting or Boy Scouting, Venturing is a traditional program of the Boy Scouts of America. As a result, Venturers have opportunities that most people only dream about. Rappelling a cliff. Perfecting your shot. Designing a robot. Kayaking into the sunset. Exploring your faith. Volunteering at an animal shelter. The choice is yours!

The Venturing program usually operates at the local level in units called Venturing crews. Each crew has youth members, adult advisors, and a committee of adults which supports the youths’ activities. Venturing is youth-led and youth-inspired, so the youth are the ones who lead the crew, plan fun activities, and determine what the crew will do. The youth are supported by adult advisors, who mentor the youth and provide guidance as they learn and grow. Crews typically have between 8-20 youth members.

Crews are supported by a network of Venturing Officers’ Associations, or VOAs, at the council, area, region, and national levels. These organizations are groups of youth leaders and adult advisors who are dedicated to helping crews grow and delivering an outstanding Venturing program. Your local council may already have a VOA (check here to find out), but if not, you can start one!

Area SR-6 serves Venturers throughout the nine BSA councils which span Kentucky, Tennessee, and half of Mississippi. The Blue Grass Council, Cherokee Area Council, Chickasaw Council, Great Smoky Mountain Council, Lincoln Heritage Council, Middle Tennessee Council, Sequoyah Council, West Tennessee Area Council, and Yocona Area Council are all members of Area SR-6. In turn, SR-6 joins ten other areas to form the Southern Region, one of the four regions in the nation-wide Boy Scouts of America.

SR-6 has an active VOA and an exciting year-round program. In addition to supporting council VOAs throughout the area, the SR-6 VOA plans and runs several fun events each year—including our flagship event, SOAR. We represent the Venturers in SR-6 to the Southern Region and National VOAs and, in turn, keep Venturers posted on upcoming activities and other opportunities throughout the Venturing community.

If you have any questions or would like to get involved with SR-6, just send us a note and we’ll get back to you! Thanks for visiting SR-6 Venturing!
